St. Martin Rotunda

The Rotunda of St. Martin is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Prague, on the grounds of the Vyšehrad fortress. Built in the 11th century, it is an example of early Romanesque architecture.

The chapel has a characteristic cylindrical form with a semicircular apse, typical of rotundas of the period. In the past it served religious functions and was linked to the development of the early medieval centre of power at Vyšehrad.

The rotunda has survived numerous reconstructions and conflicts while keeping its original form, which makes it an exceptional testimony to the oldest history of Prague.

Satori Cities

On a Satori Cities walk, St. Martin Rotunda is not treated as a box to tick. It is a place to notice vaulted air, quiet thresholds, and patient stone, to slow the body down, and to receive the historical context only after perception has done its work.
